Early rumors about the iPhone 14 indicate that Apple plans to cancel this gap next year. There are two possible ways to achieve this goal with Touch ID or Face ID on the screen. A patent granted today describes how to integrate two forms of biometric authentication into the screen. It is even possible to embed the front camera into the screen, although this may be a later development… Apple explained that the current iPhone design has an image sensor next to the screen, not part of it, although the design notch gives the impression of It is part of the screen.

Usually, the image sensor is placed under the protective cover, close to the screen battery. Therefore, traditional electronic devices that combine a display stack and an image sensor generally require a large-area protective cover that extends beyond the periphery of the display stack to reserve space to accommodate the image sensor.

This conventional structure undesirably increases the apparent size of the bezel area surrounding the display, and at the same time undesirably increases the size and volume of the housing of the electronic device. The main focus of this patent is to embed an image sensor in the screen to read the fingerprint, that is, the embedded Touch ID. For simplicity of description, many of the following embodiments refer to the structure of the electronic device to realize the image on the screen.

One or more images of the user’s fingerprint are captured by touching a specific area (“image area”, above the image aperture) of the screen of the electronic device. However, Apple points out that the same method can be used for other forms of biometric identification, including Face ID. As described above, electronic devices can deploy images across screens for any suitable purpose of image capture, detection, data aggregation, or light capture, including but not limited to facial recognition. The ID and Touch ID embedded in the display will be a way to make everyone happy.

Bloomberg recently stated that Face ID will be available on the Mac in a few years. In the long run, the front camera can also be integrated into the display. However, early attempts at this quality were significantly reduced, including haze, low contrast, and inaccurate white balance. However, these issues are not necessarily obstacles to Face ID, so we will almost certainly look at this step first.
